Preparing for your course
Introduction to study techniques:
The Student Advice Centre provides the online platform "Fit for Studying" for students in all facilities, as an introduction to study techniques at Paderborn University.
Refresh your knowledge:
In subjects with a significant maths component, preparatory courses are available for new students, to refresh their knowledge before the start of the semester:
- Preparatory courses in mathematics for Business Administration and Economics degree programmes
- Preparatory course in mathematics for STEM degree programmes
- Preparatory course in mathematics for Science degree programmes
In the winter semester 2020/21, a preparatory course will also be offered for the first time for first-year students of the computer science degree programmes. This preparatory course is intended in particular to make it easier for those who have not yet been able to deal with the subject of computer science so intensively at school or during their training.
Courses and examinations in Latin and Ancient Greek:
Some courses require language skills in Latin and/or Ancient Greek. If you are unable to provide evidence of the relevant language skills with your school leaving certificate, you will need to take an appropriate language course. The Centre for Language Studies (ZfS) offers a comprehensive range of courses and examinations here, which you can take advantage of even before you start your degree.
Key tips for new students can be found here
Refresh your language skills or learn a language:
The Centre for Language Studies regularly offers intensiv courses during the semester break, which you can also take before you start your degree. You can also study towards language certificates, such as TOEFL or DELE certificates, which are sometimes a prerequisite for enrolment. All language courses are subject to fees.
Freshers’ Week
You will get a course-specific induction to your course during Freshers’ Week. You will get to know the campus, your professors and your fellow students. You will also be given information on the structure of your course and your timetable.
